Choroidal osteoma with choroidal excavation and associated neovascular membrane: An OCT-angiography study.

2017

Abstract Clinical case A case is presented of a unilateral choroidal osteoma with choroidal excavation and associated neovascular membrane that was studied using OCT-angiography. The OCT and OCT-angiography revealed an area of choroidal excavation and an active neovascular membrane. Three doses of aflibercept were administered to the patient, which stabilized the neovascularisation. Discussion OCT-angiography was used to analyze the morphology of the superficial vascular network of the osteoma, as well as to monitor the evolution of the neovascular membrane.

A questionable diagnosis in a woman with drowsiness

2019

A 60-year-old caucasian woman was admitted to our Division of Internal Medicine for a 10-day history of drowsiness, irritability, dysphasia, weakness and difficulties in the maintenance of an upright position with numerous falls, with a traumatic lumbar spine injury and on the left shoulder. Then, while general clinical conditions were getting worse with drowsiness and hyposthenia of the right side of the body, after neurological evaluation, she was recovered in hospital. Pathological history includes a 20-year epilepsy and depression with emotional lability, behavior’s disorders and attempted suicide. For such reason, she was followed in a mental health institute, treated with phenobarbita…

Compound odontoma erupting in the mouth: 4-year follow-up of a clinical case

1992

A case of a compound odontoma erupting in the oral cavity is presented: a follow-up study of 4 yr has been performed evaluating the possible relationship with a previous dental trauma. A discussion is presented concerning the etiologic aspects, clinical signs, diagnostic aids and therapeutic approaches to this type of lesion.

Five years experience on 3,4-diaminopyridine phosphate in Lambert-Eaton syndrome: Case reports

2017

Abstract Rationale: To report our experience on 7 patients (4 males and 3 females), affected by nonparaneoplastic Lambert–Eaton myasthenic syndrome, treated with 3,4-diaminopyridine phosphate (3,4-DAPP) either alone or in combination with other immunosuppressants or steroids. Patient concerns: Patients have been evaluated at specific timepoints (ie, baseline and last 5 year follow-up), with neurological examination, autoantibodies against presynaptic voltage-gated Cav2.1 (P/Q type) calcium ion channel (VGCC) dosage, neurophysiological evaluation focusing on the increased amplitude of the compound muscle action potential (cMAP) after maximum voluntary effort, quantitative myasthenia gravis (…

Dental management of patients with endocrine disorders

2010

Introduction: The endocrine system is responsible for hormonal secretion and is closely related to the central nervous system, as it diversifies its functions through the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. It controls physiological processes and maintains homeostasis. The neuroendocrine system is responsible for adaptation to environmental changes. Therefore, in dentistry, it is important to be aware of the risks and difficulties that may arise during the dental management of patients with endocrine disorders, and that visits to the dental clinics often represent a stressful situation. Objectives: To review the literature on oral manifestations and dental management in patients with endocri…

Catalogue of Interactive Learning Objectives to improve an Integrated Medical and Dental Curriculum.

2016

ABSTRACT Introduction Online learning media are increasingly being incorporated into medical and dental education. However, the coordination between obligatory and facultative teaching domains still remains unsatisfying. The Catalogue of Interactive Learning Objectives of the University Clinic of Mainz (ILKUM), aims to offer knowledge transfer for students while being mindful of their individual qualifications. Its hierarchical structure is designed according to the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) levels of competence. Materials and methods The ILKUM was designed to establish a stronger interconnection between already existing and prospective learning strategies. All conte…

Limitations of Immunohistochemistry in Diagnosis of a Primary Mucinous Carcinoma of the Skin and Its Metastasis

2020

We describe the case of a 67-year-old female patient who presented with an unclear swelling on the right supraclavicular neck, two years after resection of a mucinous carcinoma on the right mastoid. Two pathological reports from separate universities diagnosed the primary mastoid skin lesion as a metastatic adenocarcinoma. Strikingly, GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) and mammaglobin, both immunomarkers found in breast cancer, were positive. An urgent search for the primary tumor most likely in the breast was commenced. However, as no other primary tumor could be detected at that time, a Primary Mucinous Carcinoma of the Skin (PMCS) was also debated. Two years later neck node enlargement was s…

A case report of double etiology of ecthyma gangrenosum

2019

Abstract Rationale: Ecthyma gangrenosum is a cutaneous infection, most commonly occurring during sepsis evolution with Pseudomonas aeruginosa on an immunocompromised background. There have been rare case reports in previously healthy children and rarer are the cases with double etiology. Patient concerns: We present the case of a female Caucasian patient, aged 1 year and 8 months, who developed severe sepsis during flu evolution with predominant respiratory and cerebral manifestations. On admission, at skin level, there was noticed a necrotic coccygeal ulceration (with rapid increasing dimensions 0.5/0.5 cm in 24 hours), and with the transformation from a dry necrosis in a sphacelus at the …

Papilla and pontic area regeneration in patient with gingival smile: A clinical case

2018

Purpose Connective tissue grafts are widely documented as a predictable technique for treating Miller Class I and II recessions, as well as procedures in which soft tissue augmentation is required for aesthetic reasons. This article aims to explore the resolution of a clinical case with this type of problema. Clinical case This case describes a technique for reconstructing a pontic area and adjacent papilla by means of two consecutive connective tissue grafts. The first graft served to increase the amount of tissue in the horizontal direction, and the second promoted vertical reconstruction of the defect. Results and conclusion In cases with aesthetic requirements, restorative intervention …

Pharmacological treatment of burning mouth syndrome : a review and update

2007

Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is defined as a burning sensation in the tongue or in any other region of the oral mucosa, in the absence of specific oral lesions. The present study reviews the pharmacological treatments used in the last 10 years to reduce the symptoms of BMS, and assesses the efficacy and safety of pharmacological interventions destined to alleviate the symptoms of BMS. To this effect, searches were made in the following databases: Micromedex®, Cochrane Database® and PubMed®, crossing the following key words: drug, treatment, clinical trial, pain management, and burning mouth syndrome. The searches were limited to articles published in the last 10 years in English or Spanish,…
